|
Regular Members Meeting Held
by Be Fojas
The annual meeting of Asiapro’s Regular Members was held on April 16 at the Richmonde Hotel along San Miguel Avenue, Pasig City. The General Assembly meeting was attended by the Regular Members and Key Officers of Asiapro including those who came all the way from Visayas and Mindanao.
Mr. Gary Quemado, Asiapro President and General Manager, discussed the Cooperative’s business performance in 2010 and updated everyone on the following subsidiaries: Memphis Trucking Corporation and Agrilogx, and strategic partner Oasia Global Resources, Inc..
The financial highlights and net surplus for allocation to members covering 2010 were presented by the then Chief Finance Officer Mr. Rolly Malana, now Chief Investments and Treasury Officer.
Mr. Ed Castañeda, Chairman of the Board, caught everyone’s interest as he explained the updates in the Cooperative’s by-laws. He also proposed to the body that capitalization requirements of an Associate Member and a Regular Member may be increased to support the diversification programs of Asiapro. This was then approved by the General Assembly.
He further disclosed that some Associate Members will be invited to become Regular Members to boost Associate Members’ representation in policy and decision-making activities. This move is in line with the new guidelines specified in the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008 Implementing Rules and Regulations.
The message given by Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Executive Director Neil Santillan boosted the morale of the Regular Members even further. He understands that there are challenges facing workers cooperatives ever since this novel concept was introduced by Asiapro’s founder, Leo G. Parma. He encouraged everyone to persevere because of the valuable contribution Asiapro has made to improve the lives of non-regular workers.
Lastly, Asiapro Founder and Vice Chairman of the Board Mr. Leo G. Parma recalled how general assemblies used to be held in fastfood outlets during the Cooperative’s early years. This gave everyone a greater appreciation of the organization’s accomplishments and endurance despite the odds that were encountered.
