ILO’s Recommendation 2002 emphasizes
the importance of cooperatives

ILO Director General, Juan Somavia sees the importance of stakeholder engagement and cooperative development.

 The General Conference of the International Labor Organization convened at Geneva in its 90th Session on 03 June 2002.  It adopted the “Promotion of Cooperatives” Recommendation 2002, emphasizing the important role cooperatives perform in creating jobs, resource mobilization, and cooperatives-of-all-types’ overall impact to the economy.

The promotion and strengthening of the cooperative’s identity should be encouraged on the basis of cooperative values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy and solidarity.

The Recommendation also states categorically, the significant role of employers’ and workers’ organizations, and cooperatives for the attainment of people’s sustainable development aspiration.
