Maragusan members among top graduates of the
Alternative Learning System (ALS)
Age did not stop our members to find a way to finish their education. They registered to the Alternative Learning System Accreditation and Equivalency (ALS A and E) Tests of the Department of Education (see related article, Alternative Learning System*) which was adopted by an Asiapro client to allow members to finish basic education. With the help of the DepEd “Mobile” teachers, the members were able to attend their classes every Sunday.

Their sacrifices paid off last April 1, 2011 wherein six members successfully graduated from this program. They are Joenalyn Abellana (Top 1 ALS passer), Mary Ann Tilampay (one of the Top 10 ALS passers), Vivian Anong, Wilma Del Rosario, Eva Tormis and Eleonor Garces.

With the implementation of the Department of Education Memo No. 123, s. 2011 and DO No. 58, s. 2010 or the Guidelines for the 2011 Alternative Learning System Accreditation and Equivalency (ALS A and E) Tests, there is a greater chance for everyone to finish their studies.

All unemployed adults, industry-based undergraduate workers, members of cultural minorities, physically-challenged individuals and all others who were not able to finish their elementary and high school education are allowed to take this non–formal education program.

Learning usually takes place in barangay halls or community learning centers facilitated by a mobile teacher. The learners must complete the 10-month learning and review session. After completion, their performance will be assessed in preparation for the Accreditation and Equivalency Tests (A and E).

Successful learners receive a certificate of rating and diploma that will give them a greater chance to attend to formal education and to enrol for a college degree or in any technical and vocational courses.
